layers – matsudo edition –

Light touches a single thread. Fragments of a landscape appear between the overlapping lines.
“layers” is an installation that explores the nature and memories within us through thread, moving images, and sound. Footage of nature and landscapes, filmed in different places, is broken down and rebuilt using a custom program, then projected onto layers of thread. The threads divide the light into fine lines and colors, creating different views as time passes and the viewer moves.
For Matsudo International Science Art Festival 2026, the theme “Weaving the Microcosmos” led the work from a mainly flat form into a three-dimensional structure. Threads stretch through a wooden cube in the detached guest room of Tojo-tei House. The movement of light and the sound were created for this space. Light and shadows pass through the threads and reach the shoji screens, sliding doors, and ceiling, bringing the artwork and the architecture together.
Fragments of different places and times meet in the light before us. Watching these changes offers a moment to reflect on the paths we have taken and the landscapes we carry within.
